Activity Idea (empowerment/anti-bullying):
Discuss as a class “What is bullying?” What does the song teach us?
This is a great topic to use for Drama and role-plays. Generate situations as a class and act out first the bullying behavior. Act out the situation again, this time including solutions to the bullying actions.
The following books are wonderful for young children to teach how to deal with bullies:
Oliver Button is a Sissy, by Tomie dePaola, is the story of a boy who stands up to bullies.
Simon’s Hook, by Karen Gedig Burnett, is a perfect book for teaching children how to deal with teasing and to foster self-empowerment.
Bye-Bye, Bully: A Kid’s Guide for Dealing with Bullies
This is a great resource by J.S. Jackson that teaches kids nonviolent strategies for dealing with bullies, ways to assert and protect themselves, and when to ask for adult help.
